Chip Grabber™ Receives Patent for New Approach To Remove
Chips/Oil from Coolant Sump
New compact unit contains patented
technology to create a lower-cost solution than existing skimmers or
drag-outs
Cleveland,
OH, April 5, 2005 – Abanaki Corporation, the world leader in oil
skimming products, has received a patent for the technology innovation it uses
to separate and remove chips from coolant sumps. Originally introduced in
October, 2003, the Chip Grabber™
easily mounts to the side of virtually any machining center coolant sump. Using
an existing opening or through a small access cutout, the unit's plastic
collector tube runs through the surface of the coolant collecting tramp oil. It
snakes along the tank bottom and picks up ferrous steel chips and swarf. The
chips are collected in a waste container. The secret to the unit is its
proprietary tube technology. For the first time, a skimmer pickup media is both
oleophilic (attracting tramp oils) and highly magnetic (attracting steel chips).
Traditional oil skimmers just remove oil. Drag-out machines that had been used
to address the problem are large and expensive, making them impractical for a
single machine tool. The Chip Grabber is compact, designed for individual
machines. Its size and effectiveness over other methods allows metalworking
operations to save thousands of dollars.
The Chip Grabber features a fan-cooled continuous duty motor and collector
tube allowing a reach of four feet; longer lengths are also available.

oil and coolant to be recycled, thus avoiding contingent liabilities and costs
associated with disposal. Besides off-the-shelf oil and grease skimmers, Abanaki
supplies custom designed (turnkey) pollution control systems for a wide variety
of applications. Headquartered in Cleveland Ohio, Abanaki has served a global
customer base in industries as diverse as iron and steel, wastewater, paper,
